The National Directorate of Employment (NDE), on Thursday empowered 1,130 Women and Youths to help cushion the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria.
The flag off ceremony took place in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital under the Micro Enterprises Enhancement Loan Scheme (MEELS) in collaboration with the member representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency, Hon. Chinedu Ogah, Chairman Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Chief Elias Mbam and a woman leader, Princess Tonia Adol-Awam, all gearing towards driving unemployment out of the nation.
The Director General of the NDE, Dr. Mohammed Argungu, represented by Ebonyi State Coordinator of the Directorate, Marcel Igboanude, lamented the level of unemployment in the country, saying it is a threat to national development.
According to the Director,
“Unemployment has indeed been a serious threat and that is why it features highly on the development agenda of most governments, donor agencies and other development partners across the globe.
“it is apparent that Nigeria as a nation is highly endowed with both human and natural resources. However, unemployment remains one of the various serious challenges mitigating against its march to full development.”
Meanwhile, each beneficiary received N10,000 loan with 9% interest rate to start up small scale business which according to the Directorate, would make them self reliant and as well mitigate unemployment in the country.
