The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Wednesday adopted its 10th Assembly 1st session plenary calendar.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the session commenced on June 13 through May 23, 2024.
This development followed a motion moved by the House Leader, Alhaji Bello Idris (APC-Gwadabawa North), and seconded by Alhaji Habibu Modachi (PDP-Isa).
Idris said the adoption was in view of the provision of Section 104 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
According to him, the session prescribed that a House of Assembly shall sit for a period of not less than 181 days in a year.
“In pursuant of this provision therefore this House do adopt a sitting calendar commencing from June 13, 2023, to May 23, 2024.
“This is totaling 194 days, end of first session of the 10th Assembly,” the Lawmaker said.
The House leader added that the first quarter of the Assembly plenary, which commenced on June 13, will end on Aug. 31, with an adjournment from June 22, to July 11, for Eid-el-Kabir festival.
“The House will go on recess from Sept. 1 to 25, end of first quarter first session to allow members visit their constituencies.
“Therefore, the Assembly second quarter will commence Sept. 26, and end on Dec. 21, for a recess from Dec. 22, to Jan. 8, 2024, to enable members celebrate New Year.
“The third quarter commencing from Jan. 9, 2024, to March 21, 2024, will have a recess from March 22 to April 22 to allow members celebrate Eid-el-Fitr.
“While the fourth quarter will commence from April 23 to end May 23, allowing for a recess from May 24 to June 10, for the members to celebrate Democracy Day,” he said.
The Speaker, Alhaji Tukur Bala (APC-Bodinga South) put the motion into a voice vote which was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers. (NAN)
