The Vice-Chancellor, University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, on Friday told the 11,011 fresh students for the 2020/2021 academic session to shun cultism, drug peddling, rape and other anti-social vices.
Obi gave the advice at the matriculation of the students in Calabar, urging them to also report any form of harassment or exploitation, either by their fellow students or staff, to principal officers of the institution. She disclosed that the matriculating students were lucky, as 47, 149 candidates wrote the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination with UNICAL as their first choice.
The vice chancellor told the students that the school had put in place uninterrupted internet services for them on campus.
“This administration is determined to improve the welfare of students on campus.“ It may interest you to know that this present administration has institutionalised campus-wide uninterrupted internet services for all students, to ease their learning.
“Also, with the measures put in place by this administration, students can now freely access health facilities in our medical centre,” she said. Obi advised the fresh students to embrace the current online registration policy of the university.
“The e-registration may save you the risk of buying fake tellers or scratch cards from anyone.“ I personally advise you to go to the bank and pay your school charges to obtain your pin code, if you have not done so. After paying your school charges, you are required to register all your courses online,” she said.
Obi said that 65 per cent of the students were admitted into the science-based departments which include Medicine and Medical-related courses.
She said that 35 per cent of the students were admitted into Arts and Humanities which covered Education, Law, Social and Management Sciences.
The vice-chancellor stated that the university management had begun the massive restructuring of students’ hostels, in spite of the financial challenges. (NAN)
