The Bauchi State Shari’a Commission says it sponsored the education of no fewer than 550 students through the provision of scholarship in the last 13 years.
Malam Muhammad Hadi, the acting Director in charge of Islamic Evangelism (Da’awah), made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Monday.
He said the beneficiaries were carefully selected, adding that in due course the commission will expand the scope to accommodate more beneficiaries.
The director explained that out of the beneficiaries, 40 had graduated from universities while 300 had completed polytechnics and colleges of education.
Hadi added that 210 others were sponsored to re-sit WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, and assisted to secure admission in higher institutions.
He said that the commission would intensify community mobilization to reduce rising cases of criminality in the society, which he attributed to illiteracy, poverty, idleness and redundancy.
The director appealed to the state government to provide the commission with operational vehicles, adequate funding and logistics to carry out its evangelism and enlightenment campaign across the state. (NAN)
