Nathi Mthethwa, South Africa, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture,said that his country will use the 2023 Netball World Cup to grow tourism, develop infrastructure and grow the economy.
Mthethwa made the remarks on Tuesday while briefing the media about the newly established board that will be responsible for organising the 2023 Netball World.
“The 2023 Netball World Cup is part of the government’s recovery and reconstruction plan.
“We see opportunities for economic spinoffs as a result of the World Cup in terms of sports, tourism and meetings. This is an opportunity to boost tourism, jobs opportunities during and after the World Cup we expect to get more tourists,’’ he said.
“We believe developing our skills and providing the infrastructure will have a long and lasting effect through generations to come. We want to have shared benefits with our neighbors for coaches and umpires.
“ The rollout of infrastructure has begun and is gaining momentum,’’ he added.
Patience Shikwambana, chairperson of the board of the organising committee of the 2023 Netball World Cup said they won’t let the country down.
She said they are committed to “openness, accountability and transparency’’.
They will ensure that there is security during the World Cup and benefit the region and the continent. (Xinhua/NAN)
