There was a sense of confusion and fear among residents of the Oke Ogba community in Akure, the Ondo state capital, as armed robbers raided the area, stealing three vehicles within a span of 24 hours.
The incidents, which took place on Wednesday and Thursday nights, have left the community in a state of panic.
Prompt News reports that residents, who had parked their vehicles in their usual spots, woke up to find their cars missing the following mornings.
It was reported that two Toyota Camry vehicles, one of which was a pencil model, were stolen.
As of press time, the make of the third vehicle is still unknown.
According to sources, the two security guards employed by the community allegedly abandoned their posts on the night of the thefts.
They had reportedly requested an increase in their monthly salary from the chairman of the landlord association, and upon being denied, they ceased their duties.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, speculated that the security guards could be involved in the thefts.
The resident said, “The security guards approached the landlord chairman and unexpectedly announced they were quitting their positions. The chairman informed them that they couldn’t leave without giving at least one month’s notice to allow the community time to hire replacements.”
The resident continued, “We were shocked when, on Thursday night, the guards didn’t show up for their shift, leaving the community gate unsecured overnight. The next morning, two vehicles had been stolen, with a third vehicle taken the night before. This is both shocking and devastating.”
The incident has been reported to the Fanibi police station, and the suspects are currently in police custody.
This is not the first robbery to occur in the area. Residents have raised concerns about the increasing frequency of robberies and burglaries in Oke Ogba, including a recent theft of a transformer cable in the Oluwalose community. Despite these ongoing crimes, there have been no arrests.
Local residents, frustrated by the lack of action, are calling for increased police intervention. One resident lamented, “We’ve heard that Oke Ogba is becoming notorious for robberies and burglaries, and despite efforts by the landlords to secure the area, the results have been disappointing.”
They continued, “Between May last year and January this year, there have been over nine cases of robberies and burglaries. All these incidents were reported to the Fanibi police station, but we haven’t seen any real action yet.”
