By Gracious Akujobi Nigeria Referees Association (NRA) will on Thursday in Abuja conduct screening for referees for international assignment.
The NRA invited 39 referees, 28 new ones will join 11 elite referees who already have FIFA badge.
The referees on Wednesday began the first stage of their screening undergoing medical test and will continue with the fitness tests on Thursday.
Linus Mba, Consultant refereeing for Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and CAF/FIFA instructor told Prompt News that it has become an annual ritual.
According to him, “Every year in September national associations all over the world make recommendations to FIFA for these referees who will be considered by FIFA and registered as international referees
“Nigeria started this week, to conduct the various tests. They have to go through intensive medical checkup, and by Thursday they will be going through the physical fitness test.
“After that we will look at their match reports their assessments over the years and their technical performance, and the federation will make recommendations to FIFA, so they are here to try their luck if they can be upgraded to FIFA status” he stated .
Mba concluded by saying the referees invited are those who have potentials and are currently on the list to be upgraded.
The fitness test commenced at 7am at the Abuja national stadium.
