As Muslims faithful worldwide look forward to the start of Ramadan, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Sunday enjoined Nigerian Muslims to look out for the new moon from Monday, July 8.
Should the moon be sighted on Monday, July 8, Muslims in the country would join their brothers and sisters across the world to begin fasting on Tuesday, which will last between 29 or 30 days.
A statement issued by Professor Sambo Wali, the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sokoto Sultanate Council, said anybody that sights the moon should communicate immediately to the Sultan.
The statement reads, “This is to inform you that Monday, July 8 is the 29th day of Sha’aban 1434 AH and shall be the day to start looking for the new moon of Ramadan”.
Also, Muslims are enjoined to call the following telephone numbers to report the sighting of the new moon: 0803-715-7100; 0803-041-3534; 0803-507-3872; 0803-596-5322 and 0803-314-3866.
