By Olusegun Lawrence                       Nigeria’s Senate on Thursday constituted an Ad hoc Committee to investigate how funds allocated to the power sector were managed by the successive Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regimes from 1999.

The Ad hoc Committee is chaired by Senator Abubakar‎ Kyari. It will be recalled that former President Obasanjo initiated the privatisation of power sector leading to unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, an aspect of which is now the TCN.

Senate also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to order the Transmission Company‎ of Nigeria, TCN, to reconnect Maiduguri back to the National Grid.

Senator Ali Ndume from Borno, had sponsored a motion, expressing dissatisfaction with‎ the disconnection of Maiduguri from the National grid and the general power degeneration across the country.

It also directed the Joint Task Force (JTF) to clear Maiduguri of insurgents and provide security for the TCN to reconnect the area to the National Grid.

It also urged the federal government to complete the Manbila power project.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, noted that inadequate power supply Iin the country has adversely affected economic growth and become a great concern to the nation.
