A Nigerian police officer, Hadaina Dan-Taki, has sparked outrage after vowing to lead a retaliatory attack against southerners in the North following the killing of 16 northern hunters in Uromi, Edo State.
A screenshot of Mr. Dan-Taki’s Facebook post, in which he threatened violence, went viral on Wednesday. “I swear to Almighty God, we must do something for you guys. Have you forgotten all your brothers living here in the North? Mark my words—after one week, you shall see the result,” he wrote.
Checks on his Facebook account revealed that his profile was locked, preventing public access. However, his display and header photos showed him wearing a police uniform.
Efforts to get a response from Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi were unsuccessful, as he did not answer calls from Peoples Gazette. However, when tagged to the viral post on X, Mr. Adejobi responded, saying the matter had been “noted for necessary action.”
The 16 hunters, who were traveling from Port Harcourt through Uromi, were reportedly ambushed, doused in petrol, and set ablaze by a mob accusing them of being kidnappers.
In response, President Bola Tinubu has ordered a manhunt for those responsible for the killings, while Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo visited Kano State to commiserate with the victims’ families. He also confirmed that 14 suspects had been arrested in connection with the crime.
