The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested 17 individuals for their alleged involvement in the lynching of a man accused of witchcraft in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo North Local Government Area.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the incident occurred on January 3, 2025.
The victim, Uromchi Okorocha, was accused by some youths of being responsible for multiple deaths in the community through supposed spiritual means.
Instead of reporting the matter to law enforcement, the suspects allegedly took matters into their own hands.
They captured Mr. Okorocha and carried out a violent attack, which ended in his death and subsequent burning.
Officers from the Uwanna Division, accompanied by tactical teams, were dispatched to rescue the victim. However, by the time they arrived, the mob had already killed and set him on fire.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun strongly condemned the act of jungle justice, describing it as a complete disregard for the rule of law.
“This unlawful act of taking the law into their hands will not be tolerated. Citizens must always report any suspected crimes to the appropriate authorities,” he stated.
The IGP reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring justice and public safety.
He urged the public to work with law enforcement agencies and provide credible information to help maintain order and prevent further acts of violence.
