Mr Wasiu Adesina, the Executive Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government (LG), on Thursday urged residents to be patient with the present government as it was working to revamp the country’s economy.
Adesina made the appeal during the distribution of food palliatives to no fewer than 3,000 households in Ikorodu at the Council Secretariat in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the food palliative includes Garri, Rice and Beans.
Beneficiaries were drawn from across the wards, Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Committees (CDCs), youths, retirees and other vulnerable groups.
Adesina said the distribution of the palliatives aimed at cushioning the effect of fuel subsidy removal, and targeted the most vulnerable residents.
“We made this modest effort as part of our responsibility in addition to protecting lives and property of residents in Ikorodu LG.
“Today, we decided to distribute food items to the aged, widowed, physically-challenged, party members and other stakeholders in Ikorodu.
“This is government’s way of cushioning the effect of removal of fuel subsidy and it will be done periodically.
“My advise to people is to be patient with the present administration as it intends to remove the problems bedeviling the nation, so that its potential can be harnessed, ” he said.
According to the chairman, the prevailing challenges are inherited and temporary, but President Bola Tinubu has already rolled up his sleeves to proffer long-lasting solutions that will bring prosperity to Nigerians.
He said his administration had been seeking strategies to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on people at the grassroots, and ensuring that essential food and services remained accessible to vulnerable people.
“Recently, as part of our strategy, my administration provided money and gifts to retirees to also cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.
“I commend the entire staff for their usual support and perseverance, especially in regards to transportation.
The Traditional Ruler of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Shotobi, commended the chairman and urged residents to support the present government as it was working to revamp the country’s economy.
Shotobi, represented by Chief Kayode Olomo, Baale of Ojogbe, appealed to residents to be patient, adding that the country would soon move out of the hardship currently being experienced.
Also speaking, Mr Sesan Oduolowu, ex-CDA Chairman, said the palliative had come at the right time when people were going through untold hardship.
He urged the chairman to make the distribution quarterly, so that many more people could benefit.
Also, Mrs Abimbola Obaseki, Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), thanked the chairman for being fair in the distribution.
Obaseki appealed for continuous and consistent distribution of the palliatives to alleviate the suffering of the masses. (NAN)
