By Mohammed Yangida, Lafia Aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party youths in Nasarawa State on Monday attacked the party’s governorship candidate, Yusuf Agabi and other leaders.
Also attacked by the irate youths were state chairman of the party, Yunana Iliya and the secretary, Adamu Oyanki, killing one person and injured five others.
The attack was carried out in Doma, Doma Local Government Area of the State by youths identified to be loyalists to the former Nasarawa state governor Aliyu Akwe Doma.
The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) in the state, Ismail Numan confirmed the incident, saying “one person died and five others were injured as investigation is still on. No arrest has been made so far”.
Problem started when the aggrieved supporters of the ex-governor demanded that the state secretary of the party who is an indigene of Doma LGA should not address the crowd at the rally held at Islamiya Primary School, Doma.
The mobs, who dressed in party T- shirt threw stones and pure water at the party officials on the podium.
The insistence of the party stalwarts to accommodate the secretary spurred mayhem that disrupted the rally.
The situation would have degenerated save for timely intervention of security agents who fired gunshots and teargas canister intermittent in the air to disperse the crowd.
The party’s governorship candidate, Yusuf Agabi was prevented from addressing the large crowd, and his Prado SUV windscreen was smashed.
In related development, the convoy of the PDP gubernatorial candidate was attacked by armed supporters of the All Progressives Congress at Ungwan Kasa in Doma LGA, a stronghold of the APC while on his way to pay homage to the paramount ruler of Doma, the Andoma of Doma, Ahmad Aliyu Ogah .
Justifying the attack, a member of the ruling APC who pleaded anonymity said, “The convoy of Governor Al-Makura was attacked by PDP supporters calling him all sorts of names while some are saying thief while others are saying deaf.
“This ignited a crisis that was curtailed by security operatives and what we have done is a reprisal attack.”
