The National Sports Commission (NSC) has applauded the Nigerian men’s squash team for its remarkable performance at the 2024 Men’s World Team Squash Championship in Hong Kong.
The Nigerian team achieved a dominant 3-0 victory over China before securing a hard-fought 2-1 win against Peru on Saturday, extending its impressive run in the global tournament.
The Nigerian team had a slow start, suffering two consecutive defeats, before bouncing back to win four straight games. The results have now propelled Nigeria to the final of the tourney, where they will square up against Japan on Sunday morning (7:30a.m Nigerian time).
Reacting to the team’s performance, NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described it as a significant achievement for Nigerian sports.
“The news of our squash team performance in Hong Kong is heartwarming and this is a very good sign that every sport can excel when given all the support,” Olopade said.
He further revealed the excitement of the NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, upon learning of the team’s success. “When I informed the Chairman about the feat of our squash team in Hong Kong, he was particularly happy and stressed the need to keep up the momentum, under the new mandate to build the Nigerian sports ecosystem,” Olopade stated.
He also assured the Nigeria Squash Federation of the Commission’s continued support. “And I want to assure the Nigeria Squash Federation that the National Sports Commission, under the Chairmanship of Mallam Shehu Dikko, will always give every sport all the needed support to excel,” he added.
The championship, organized by Hong Kong Squash and sanctioned by the World Squash Federation, featured 26 countries, with Nigeria and South Africa as the only African representatives.
