Liecester football club of England forward, Kelechi Iheanacho scored a brace in the first half to help Nigeria beat Liberia 2-0 in the Match Day 1 of Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup African qualifier match played at the water-soaked pitch of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
This is even as Iheanacho’s goals scored in the 23rd and 45th minutes of the match earned Nigeria three full points to go top of Group C in the Qatar 2022 African qualifiers with Liberia last in the group.
Two others in Group C, Central African Republic (CAR) and Cape Verde had on Wednesday played out 1-1 in their own game, this put Nigeria on top of the group with maximum points after a game each.
The match in Lagos did not live up to its earlier billing, no thanks to the water-logged pitch which made the game look like one amateur football tie with no clear-cut pattern of soccer played by any of the two teams.
Although Super Eagles Head Coach Gernort Rohr made full changes, his wards did not utilize the home advantage to add more goals which may be used to determine who is the Group C winner at the end of the group matches.
Nigeria will next Tuesday meet Cape Verde in Match Day 2.
