The newly constituted board of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) on Tuesday unveiled its ‘Strategic Direction and Action Plan’ to uplift the women’s league and encourage grassroots development of the sport.
This cheering news was dropped by the new NWFL Chairperson, Ms Nkechi Obi during a media briefing in Abuja to formally make public the board’s plans for the future of the league starting from the 2023/2024 season which is just four weeks away.
She revealed that the board under her watch will work assiduously to create a professional women’s football ecosystem in Nigeria, pointing out that, “globally clubs are at the heart of football development and a club development strategy should therefore be at the very foundation for the development of women’s football in Nigeria”.
Speaking further the NWFL Boss laid out the strategic plans her board has formulated to drive the new vision of women’s football league in Nigeria, adding that the board has developed “Women’s Football Rising” as the platform to drive the growth strategy for 2023 and beyond.
Said she: “to this end, the NWFL Board has developed “Women’s Football Rising” as the platform to drive our growth strategy for 2023 and beyond. Women’s Football Rising is the strategic platform developed by the NWFL to exponentially grow women’s football in Nigeria through strong and sustainable football clubs”.
According to Obi, a sports marketing expert, the above mentioned platform will drive the empowerment of women football players in Nigeria through the gradual but sustained commercializstion of club football and delivery of the strategic objectives based on a sustainable and scalable execution plan.
She revealed the strategic objectives of the Women’s Football Rising platform which was presented at Women’s World Cup Watch Party on August 20 during the first official event of the current leadership of the NWFL in partnership with Laliga Global Network for Nigeria and Ghana include Growth Participation, Enhance the Commercial Value of Clubs and Build the foundation for sustainable growth.
Obi also said that: “to achieve these objectives, a five- pronged execution strategy has been developed. The strategy is based on extensive stakeholder engagements across all spheresa of endeavour, backed a vigorous media and communication campaign to drive home our message of engagement and inclusivity”. She insisted that the strategic will guide the activities of the NWFL going forward and will be implemented at both League levels as well as among the participating clubs in the League.
Obi said some of the key elements of the strategy will the NWFL Board (a) Develop and Grow (b) Showcase the NWFL (c) Communicate and Commercialise the NWFL (d) Govern and Lead (e) Educate and Empower.
According to her: “our first step in implementing this strategy is our Annual General Assembly (AGA) scheduled for October 5, 2023, pointing out that the AGA will be the first gathering of Board Members, all clubs and critical stakeholders and the discussion at the event will lay the foundation for the successful running of the league season based on the activity schedule designed”.
