Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reacted to the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Speaking in anticipation of International Women’s Day, Tinubu stressed that the Senate is a respected institution that should be treated with maturity.
Prompt News reports that the Senate earlier approved the recommendations of its Committee on Ethics and Privileges by suspending Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months
Senator Tinubu expressed confidence that lawmakers are addressing the issue appropriately, saying, “I believe the Senate is taking the necessary steps.”
Drawing from her 12 years of experience in the Senate, Tinubu encouraged women to be assertive in leadership roles and resist marginalization.
I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may say, why am I not taking a position? I believe that the Senate is doing what is needful because that’s what it is.
“It is an inside place and it’s a matured chamber. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It’s an honour for you to be in that place alone.
“I was there for 12 years, even in my younger days, and I’m still trying to look young, but people compliment you all the time, only that, women raise yourself, don’t be in a position that men will be talking to you anyhow”.
She advised women to stand their ground and confidently take up positions of authority.
Her statement comes as the Senate faces increasing public scrutiny over its handling of the allegations, with many demanding a thorough and transparent investigation.
