The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) by a student over a TikTok video.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan, Oyo State, NANS Senate President Babatunde Akinteye reaffirmed the association’s stance on upholding discipline and respect for authority while also advocating for students’ rights.
Akinteye emphasized that acts of violence and misconduct have no place in academic institutions, urging students to respect university regulations and constituted authorities.
“NANS has always been at the forefront of promoting students’ rights, academic freedom, and a conducive learning environment. However, we equally emphasize the importance of discipline and adherence to institutional rules. In this light, we strongly condemn the reported incident at UNIZIK, where a student allegedly assaulted a lecturer over a TikTok recording,” he stated.
He further described the incident as unacceptable, stressing that universities should be havens of knowledge and mutual respect between students and lecturers.
“While students have the right to express themselves, including through social media, such freedoms must be exercised with responsibility and respect for others. The reported assault is a disgrace to the student community and does not reflect the values of Nigerian students,” Akinteye added.
The NANS leader reiterated that while the association remains committed to protecting students’ rights, it will not support any student who engages in lawless behavior, disrespects lecturers, or tarnishes the image of the academic community.
Calling for a thorough and unbiased investigation by the university management, Akinteye urged that due process be followed to ensure fairness for all parties involved. If found guilty, he insisted that the student should face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the institution’s regulations to serve as a deterrent.
He concluded by emphasizing the need to maintain academic institutions as spaces of learning, respect, and professionalism, ensuring that both students and lecturers uphold the highest standards of conduct.
