A Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, Abuja, has sentenced a 30-year-old motorcyclist, Lawal Rabiu, to six months in prison for extortion and causing grievous harm.
Rabiu was arraigned on charges of criminal conspiracy, extortion, causing grievous hurt, and attempted theft.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and asked the court for leniency.
Presiding over the case, Magistrate Olatunji Oladunmoye handed down the sentence without an option of a fine, warning the convict to refrain from criminal activities and maintain good behavior.
During the hearing, the prosecution counsel, Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the complainant, Haruna Hassan of Dandu Kwali, Abuja, reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station on February 6.
According to Yakubu, on February 1, Rabiu and an accomplice, identified as Ismaila (surname unknown), who is currently at large, conspired to steal the complainant’s Boxer Bajaj motorcycle worth N1.1 million.
They also allegedly took his Infinix Hot 11 mobile phone, valued at N95,000, along with a cash sum of N39,000.
During the attack, the suspects inflicted injuries on the victim’s head and shoulder. However, a police investigation led to the recovery of the stolen items in Rabiu’s possession.
Yakubu stated that the offenses violated Sections 97, 291, 241, and 95 of the Penal Code.
