Uche Nwokwu, coordinator of the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) under the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has warned that men with enlarged breasts are at increased risk of developing breast cancer.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Mr. Nwokwu explained that while breast cancer is rare in men, it is possible because they also have breast tissue.
He noted that the risk is heightened for men undergoing hormone therapy to appear more feminine, as increased levels of estrogen can lead to breast development and potentially cancer.
“The female hormone responsible for breast growth exists in men too,” he said. “Normally, testosterone keeps it in check.
But when testosterone levels drop, estrogen may become dominant, causing breast tissue enlargement—known as gynecomastia—and increasing cancer risk.”
Mr. Nwokwu added that while breast cancer in men is uncommon, it has been documented in Nigeria.
He emphasized the need for greater awareness, especially among men with a family history of the disease or those exposed to hormonal imbalances due to illness or environmental factors.
He also said that one challenge in addressing male breast cancer is the lack of awareness and data, as many men do not recognize symptoms until the disease is advanced.
To improve monitoring, the federal government now classifies cancer as a reportable disease.
To reduce risk, Mr. Nwokwu advised men to perform regular self-checks for lumps or unusual changes in the breast area.
