The Chairman of Ebonyi State COVID-19 Fund Raising Team and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Francis Nwifuru, on Monday decried the increased rates of COVID-19 pandemic in the state, describing the situation as unfortunate.
He made this expression while receiving aided materials from the LIONS Club, an International Organization, at the Akanu Ibiam International Conference Centre, Abakaliki.
The Chairman represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Leo Ekene Oketa, however expressed his consolation over the situation, noting that only Ebonyi is well equipped to tackle the pandemic and also commended the Lions club for their humanitarian services.
Hon. Nwifuru said, “Unfortunately, Ebonyi state has recorded a number of cases but we are happy that these cases were recorded and identified through the proactive and systematic efforts of government. This means that the work of the government of his Excellency the Governor are yielding fruits. All his energies, all his plans, everything he has put together to make sure that Ebonyi people stay free and safe from the pandemic is working.
“I have heard people say over the radio and social media that the number is alarming but we understand from the other side that the numbers keep coming because we are testing a lot of people and when you don’t have the testing equipment, there is no way you will know who has or who doesn’t have and it is only in Ebonyi that we make proud to say that we have treatment centres.
“A lot of people are coming here to test and that is why we are proud of what we have achieved within this past five months. We are proud of his Excellency and his team.
“We thank the Lions club so much for coming together to make our communities better, we thank you for coming together to serve, to meet humanitarian needs, to ensure that our states and communities are better environs for us to inhabit peacefully.
We know that you are not being paid, it’s charity. So we pray God to replenish you.
“The materials are sensitive because you have recognized our health workers who are at the front line of fighting this pandemic. They are the ones who are at the war front.”
Handing over the items, the Ebonyi State Chapter President of the organization, Mrs. Jacinta Nworie expressed their readiness to partner with the state government.
Mrs. Nworie stated, “this morning, we are here to present some COVID-19 palliative donated to us by our international foundation which include 1,200pieces of hand gloves, 270 pieces of foreign made facemasks, 34 containers of sanitizers of different sizes, 5 pieces of hospital overall clothes and 5 pieces of safety google.
“Mr. Speaker, I will like you to know that we are ready to partner with Ebonyi State Government in all times and we are here to tell the state government that we are Non Governmental Organization, we are not political, we are just humanitarian service organization.
“Our own lions is an acronym:
L.I.O.N.S which means Liberty Intelligence Ours Nation Safety.
If you are at liberty you can discharge your duty, if you are intelligent you can carry out an assignment, then you can be our own Nation’s safety .
Feel free Ebonyi State government to invite Lions club to do one or two projects.”
