The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to providing a coordinated parking system through strategic regulations and monitoring of parking infrastructure.
The General Manager, Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), Mrs Adebisi Adelabu, said this in a statement through the Public Affairs Officer, Mr Abayomi Ariba, in Lagos on Friday.
Adelabu said that government, through its Traffic Management and Transportation Agenda that established the Authority, was to provide an accurate structure for parking across the state.
According to her, the State has a population of over 26 million and the land is not getting bigger.
She said that the government, therefore, intended to provide a good transportation model that would address certain challenges, such as traffic congestion, mobility and parking situations.
“Meanwhile, we have noted that some property owners including event centres and religious organisations do not create space for parking, leaving a large population of residents to park indiscriminately on roads.
“Standardised parking is a key component in the transportation sector as it addresses major parking challenges and situations.
“Various parking regulations exist in developed society to instill orderliness amongst motorists,” Adelabu said.
She emphasised on government interventions toward proffering long term solutions to parking challenges across the state.
The agency boss said the present administration was exploiting opportunities to reduce traffic congestion and drive time hours experienced by motorists in the state.
She reeled out some of the interventions of the authority in improving the parking system,
Adelabu said that the LASPA had installed various parking signages and lane markings in various locations in the state.
The general manager said that the signages and lane markings would guide motorists on appropriate parking spaces.
She said there would be appropriate information on parking procedures within each specified environment.
Adelabu said that job opportunities were inherent in the system, adding that government would employ residents to manage the marked lanes for parking across the state.
She said that LASPA had also integrated technology into the parking payment system for seamless process.
She stated that LASPA as a regulatory body would continue to monitor commercial and non-commercial parks within the state.
This, according to her, is to ensure that unregistered parking facility owners register with the authority.
Adelabu implored residents to support government’s quest towards curbing indiscriminate parking
She said that citizens need to adhere to laws of the state to make it a better society. (NAN)
