Apparently to forestall any security breaches that will scuttle the smooth conduct of the November 6 Anambra state Governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday in Abuja held a closed door meeting with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) to finetune strategies to deal with any security challenges that will arise.
In his welcome remarks, INEC Executive Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu expressed the Commission’s appreciation to the security agencies and all members of ICCES for their continued support to elections and the electoral process in Nigeria.
He however told them the focus of Thursday’s 3rd Quarterly Consultative Meeting held at INEC Headquarters in Abuja is the Anambra State Governorship election holding on 6th November 2021.
Yakubu said: “You will recall that early this year, the Commission successfully expanded voter access to polling units in Nigeria. In Anambra State, there are now 5,720 polling units to which personnel and materials will be delivered. Similarly, the number of registered voters has increased because of the CVR. All 18 political parties are fielding candidates in the election.
Those who attended the meeting were the representatives of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and Co-Chair of ICCES, Major General Babagana Monguno (Rtd) and Heads of various security organisations like the Army, Navy, Air Force and Police.
Others are Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Fire Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), etc.
