The Labour Party governorship candidate in the ongoing Imo state off-cycle election, Senator Athan Nneji Achonu has said the heavy presence of security agencies is impacting negatively in the election as the turn out of electorates has not been impressive so far.
Speaking to local and international journalists after casting his vote at exactly 10:19am alongside his wife at his Umunumo town in Ehime-Mbano Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo state, Senator Achonu popular called Agu Otu Aka (One Hand General), stated that voter apathy being experienced in his stronghold of Ehime-Mbano was as a result of heavy presence of the federal security agencies like the military outfit, police and para-military groups deployed from Abuja to keep peace during the election.
He however said that he has been assuring the locals who are sceptical about the heavy presence of security agencies to come out in their numbers to cast their votes for the Labour Party, pointing out that he is optimistic that more eligible voters will brave the heavy presence of security agencies to cast their votes.
Asked if he has confidence in the electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do a better job in the Imo governorship election than it did in the 2023 Presidential Election, Achonu said that remains to be seen, adding that it behooves on INEC to resist every temptation to compromise the election in Imo state.
