The Three Lionesses came back from the brink of elimination to win the Round of 16 epic clash 4-2 after a penalty shootout at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia on Monday morning.
With this defeat, the fiery-story journey of the Super Falcons at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Australia and New Zealand has ended.
Nigeria’s Desire Oparanozie and Mitchelle Alozie missed from the spot when it matter most while goals from Georgia Stanway, Bethany England, Alex Greenwood and
Chloe Kelly gave England the victory they wanted after grueling 120 minutes of football.
Although midfielders Rasheedat Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe scored, the earlier misses by Oparanozie and Alozie ensured that Nigeria crashed out yet again while England march on to the quarter-finals.
Expectedly, it was an encounter the team with better tactics won as Nigeria’s bench bungled what would have been an easy win after England’s Lauren James was red carded early in the second half for a silly stamp on the back of fallen Alozie.
But Sarina Wiegman tweaked her team and endured that they dragged Nigeria to extra time and penalty shootout which Nigeria lost. READ ALSO:
