A Kano State High Court has sentenced a housewife, Fadila Adamu, to death by hanging for kidnapping an eight-year-old girl and throwing her into a well, leading to her death.
Justice Yusuf Muhammad-Ubale, delivering the judgment on Friday, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Prompt News reports that the Judge convicted Adamu of kidnapping and culpable homicide.
“I hereby sentence the defendant to death by hanging for kidnapping and throwing the victim into a well, which caused her death,” the judge declared.
The prosecution, led by Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that Adamu committed the crime on July 14, 2019, in Kano’s Tudun Wada Quarters.
She allegedly took the child to her home and falsely told her sister that the girl was the daughter of a friend who had traveled to Ghana.
Three days later, on July 17, she threw the child into a deep well in the Tukuntawa Quarters, causing her death.
Seven witnesses, along with Adamu’s statements and a medical report confirming the victim’s death, were presented as evidence.
The defendant denied the charges.
The prosecution argued that the crime violated sections 274(b) and 221(a) of the Penal Code.
The defense, led by Zulaihat Tata, presented four witnesses, including the defendant, but the court ruled against her.
