Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State on Thursday, presented the Staff of Office and Instrument of Appointment to the new Onijaro of Ijaro Ekiti, Oba Joshua Ogunbiyi.
Speaking at the ceremony in Ado-Ekiti, Fayemi charged the new Oba to strive hard to make impact in the lives of his people.
He also urged him to work hard for the overall development of his kingdom.
Fayemi, represented by his deputy, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, advised the royal father to always carry his people along in decision making, especially in the area of their welfare.
The throne of Onijaro became vacant on Sept. 24, 2017, following the demise of Oba Olubunmi Ogunleye.
Ogunbiyi’s appointment was approved by the State Executive Council at its meeting of March 10, in strict adherence with the provisions of the Chiefs Law 2012.
The governor commended traditional rulers across the state for their support and exceptional contributions towards the sustenance of peace in their domains and for being there always to help resolve critical issues for the benefit of all.
While noting that, the process that produced Ogunbiyi was devoid of any political influence or manipulation, Fayemi explained that his administration had always given communities especially kingmakers free hand to choose new traditional rulers.
He reiterated that his administration accorded priority to security of lives and property, saying that all hands were on deck to flush out criminals from the state, a task he described as achievable.
The governor sought the support of the traditional institution in implementing peoples-oriented policies to impact on the lives of the citizenry, especially the use of agriculture as a launch pad to boost the state’s economy.
“Your concerted efforts are required to improve the economy of the state especially in the area of agriculture. Our approach to development is all-inclusive and the contributions of individuals and groups are appreciated,” he said.
Mr Akin Oladunjoye, Chairman, Ilejemeje local government council, expressed satisfaction with the selection process for the new Oba which he described as peaceful and lauded the state government for providing the enabling environment that made it a reality.
The Executive Secretary, the Bureau of Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Adegboyega Morakinyo, said that the selection was monitored by the agency in accordance with the extant rules and in line with the tradition of the people.
In his speech, Oba Ogunbiyi promised that his reign will be an era of blessings, prosperity for residents of the community, promising to work towards the development of the state.
He said the presentation of the staff of office has humbled him as it amounted to a challenge for him to pursue and fulfill the expectations of his subjects as their king and custodian of their culture.(NAN)
