By Gracious Akujobi Captain of IBB International and Country Club, Abuja, Debo Olateju has identified lack of sponsors as the reason why the sport of golf has not grown in leaps and bounds.
Speaking to Prompt News Online at the golf tournament organized by the Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo),Olateju said professional golfers all over the world depend on sponsorship to forge ahead and as such regretted that sponsorship of professional golfer in the country had become very difficult.
“Professionals all over the world thrive on sponsorship, unfortunately in this country we have not had many organisations coming up to sponsor and encourage the professionals.
“What we have is few individuals and corporate organization sponsorship which is not enough for the number of professionals we have in this country.
“Once we have them encouraged, then they can go and play at International level and that is the only way we can be recognized as a golf playing nation”.
He however, solicited the help of organisations like SNEPCo and other multi-nationals to encourage Nigerian professional golfers to put the country’s name on the world golf chart.
