Mrs Fatima-Binta Bello, former member, House of Representatives, who represented Kaltungo and Shongom Federal constituency, in Gombe state, has granted scholarship worth N10.8 million to 540 Tangale and Waja students.
Bello, who spoke on Wednesday, in Gombe, at the maiden edition of the Fatima-Bello Trust Fund Foundation on Education and Girl-child upliftment scholarship scheme, said that beneficiaries were picked across the tertiary institutions in the country.
According to Bello, the scholarship would assist beneficiaries, who are mostly from a less privileged background to continue in their studies.
She said that the decision was informed by her passion for education and also the need to enhance educational standards within Tangale and Waja area, comprising Balanga, Billiri, Kaltungo and Shongom Local Government Areas.
“All my life, I have been driven by my strong belief that every child has a dream, hence the need to help them realise their dreams,” Bello said.
She called on public spirited individuals from Gombe south Senatorial District, to assist students, particularly those that were indigent, to realise their dreams.
She further called on the students to be good ambassadors of the region, be united and make the area great.
In his remarks, Joffery Jona, National President, Tangale and Waja Students Association, appreciated the former lawmaker for the gesture.
Jona described the scholarship as timely, considering the COVID-19 hardship which affected the country’s economy.
He urged the students not to rely solely on education as the only priority, but also to venture into business which would make their lives better.(NAN)
