French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe must be united to send a clear political signal to Ukraine while on a visit to Romania.
“The political context and the decisions that the EU and the nations have to take justify new, deep discussions and new steps forward,” Macron told a news conference at the Mihail Kogalniceanu military base in Romania.
Macron added that he hopes for a ceasefire and restart of negotiations.
Once Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky talks to Moscow, the Western European countries would be in the conversation to provide security guarantees, he said.
Macron stressed that he supports Ukraine, but he was not waging war against Russia.
According to reports, he is to travel to Ukraine this week with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
The French president had previously stressed he would only travel to Kiev if it was useful in resolving the crisis. (dpa/NAN)
