Ebonyi Govt Launches Climate Change Policy

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has launched the State Climate Change Policy And Adaptation Plan.

Speaking on Monday, during the inaugural meeting at Osborn La Palm Hotel in Abakaliki, Governor Umahi, represented by his Deputy, Dr Kelechi Igwe, highlighted some impacts of Climate Change, saying that the office was established to eradicate poverty and enhance equity.

He said, “Global Climate Change has certain impacts on Nigeria, particularly on Agricultural production and other associated livelihood.

“It has remained an impediment to some certain efforts of government at all levels to reduce poverty amongst the populace and has also retarded the ground to ensure equity in the distribution of development benefits.

“Our administration recognized the issue of Climate Change as a Tropical one by placing it on the front burner. For this reason, we have established a Climate Change office saddled with the responsibility of ensuring a viewing and sustainable Ebonyi State.”

In her address, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Climate Change, Dr Obianuju Aloh said the change in climate not only affects environments but also all facets of life.

She however, commended the state government and her citizens for adopting the policy of tree planting and taking other necessary measures to mitigate the menace of Climate Change in the state.

According to the SSA, “Climate Change or Global warming has become a reality, a defining issue of our time and much faster than all scenarios predicted. It is not just an environmental issue, as many people might believe. It is an all-encompassing threat to Health, Agriculture, Peace and Security and all to the Global Economy. Storms, droughts, rising sea level, flooding, irregular rainfall patterns, rapid rise in zoonotic and tropical diseases, persistent rise in global temperature, etc, are bleak signs of what we are facing today.

“Large regions are becoming unhabitable because they are either flooded or they hardly get sufficient rainwater in due seasons.

“Today, Ebonyi State Government is sending a strong signal that she is not going to wait until it is too late.
The state government, through my office, has embarked on different programs aimed at mitigating Climate Change Menace in the state.

“I want to very specially thank our visionary Governor, who saw the need to combat the menace of Climate Change in the state and our country at large.”

Speaking, the Caretaker Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Comrade Ben Nwovu said the need to tackle climate change menace in the society cannot be overemphasized, adding that tree planting exercise has started in his area.
