The Federal Government has been enjoined to take urgent, swift and decisive action to ensure the safe release of 24 students abducted from the Federal University, Gusau (FUGUS), Zamfara State a couple of weeks ago.
Maryam Bukar Hassan, Lead Campaigner for Change.org Nigeria, a civil society organisation, made the call in a statement, saying she was bringing attention to Umar Gombe, the initiator of the petition #Freefugusgirls.
According to her, “The aforementioned petition is one of a critical issue concerning the recent abduction of over 24 students from the Federal University, Gusau (FUGUS), in Zamfara State.
“It encapsulates the deep concern and distress experienced by many individuals, including myself, regarding the plight of these innocent young girls.
“The objective of which is to advocate for the safe return of the abducted Fugus students and to emphasize the urgency for swift and decisive measures to ensure their safe return.
“Umar Gombe’s petition sheds light on the distressing situation and I believe spotlighting his dedication and initiative can further encourage public engagement and support in the call for the release of the abducted Fugus students.
“Zamfara State, like many other regions in the northwest, has grappled with insecurity due to the activities of bandits. The abduction of these students is a poignant reminder of the constant challenges faced by our fellow students. The fear and uncertainty they must be experiencing is unimaginable.
“It is not acceptable to stand by in silence while these young girls remain in captivity. We appeal to the relevant authorities, including the government and security agencies, to act swiftly and effectively to secure the safe release of the #FreeFUGUS girls. “Let us unite and make our voices heard. We must join hands and demand the safe return of the abducted FUGUS students. Together, we can collectively appeal to put an end to this nightmare and reunite these students with their families and communities.
