Can We Have A True Sports Person As A Minister Today? By Harry Awurumibe

After many weeks and months of waiting for Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari to appoint and assign portfolios to new ministers who will work with him to deliver the dividend of democracy to the citizens, he will finally today hand over these portfolios to Ministers-designate at a ceremony in Abuja.
Indeed, Nigerians are anxiously waiting to know which minister is assigned which portfolio. This anxiety stems from the fact that in past some of the ministers were Square Pegs in Round Holes. This state of affairs ensured that the citizenry were denied the full benefits of good governance as some of the past ministers failed woefully in their assignments.
It is no longer news that some of the former ministers had running battles with the Heads, management and staff of their ministries, agencies and parastatal under their supervision. Some of them also fought dirty with their colleagues (ministers) in other ministries in their fight against their perceived enemies heading agencies and parastatal under their ministry.
Unfortunately, Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development has fallen to this category in the recent time with the immediate past Sports ministers having running battles with not only the top Directors in the ministry but with President of National Sports Association called Federation.
It is well documented to all and sundry that there was no love lost between the leadership of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and many heads of other Sports Federations and the Sports Minister.
Infact, the “War Against NFF Leadership” in the past four years resonated around the world that it world football governing body FIFA to get the Federal Government of Nigeria to sign an undertaking that Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick is the only recognised President of NFF so that Nigeria will escape worldwide FIFA ban.
This is most unfortunate and to avoid another round of the ugly scenario, President Buhari will do sports and sportsmen and women as well as millions of sports enthusiasts a world of good to appoint for once a true sports person to manage Sports Ministry.
President Buhari looks to me to be a sports lover and a lucky one at that because his regime has always brought laurels for Nigeria through our sportsmen and women since 1995 FIFA Kodak Cup won by Nduka Ugbade led Golden Eaglets in China.
What more, President Buhari has young and vibrant candidates in the Ministers-designate who can harness the potentials of Nigerian youths through sports if the right man is appointed to run the Sports Ministry and not a novice.
This is the time to unleash a true Sports Minister, Mr. President sir.
I rest my case.
