ABUJA – By Olusegun Lawrence. The House of Representatives on Wednesday directed its Committee on Ethics and Privileges to investigate alleged infringement of members’ right and privileges by the former chairman of Appropriation Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin.
The Committee has a week within which to turn in its report. Chairman, Committee on Rules and Business, Orker Jev, had moved a motion urging the House to look into the matter.
According to Jev, the punishment for breach of the privileges of members was suspension for at least six months.
As expected, the motion threw the Chamber into a rowdy session a supporters ofJibrin kicked.
Aliyu Madaki, a staunch supporter of Jibrin kept shouting Point of Order even while Jev was moving his motion.
Moving his motion, Jev recalled how Jibrin was sacked Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation on July 21, 2016.
He also noted that following the sack, Jibrin allegedly embarked on a campaign of calumny and denigration by making false and scandalous statements and publications in the print, electronic media and internet against the entire membership and institution of the House of Representatives and National Assembly.
The motion despite interjection by Jibrin supporters was passed through a voice vote consequent upon which the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
Prompt News Online recalls that Jibrin, had alleged that Mr Dogara other Principal Officers of the House padded the 2016 budget.
He has also called on the Speaker to step aside to pave the way for unhindered investigation into the allegations.
