There were reports of heavy gunfire and explosions in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, in the wee hours of Saturday.
The gunfire and explosions were reported to have been heard around the military barracks in Maiduguri beginning from 2am.
It was said to have lasted for over one hour.
The area is close to the University of Maiduguri.
The university, it was learnt, was not affected.
However, sources around the vicinity said the suspicion is that members of dreaded sect, Boko Haram, have launched another attack on the military barracks.
About a month ago, members of the sect attempted gaining entrance into the barracks where captured Boko Haram members are believed to be held in detention.
During the encounter, over 200 Boko Haram members were believed to have been killed, with the military chasing the fleeing members of the sect as far as Nigeria’s border with Cameroon.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, confirmed the development to The Eagle Online.
Olukolade, however, said he was yet to get the details.
