A Kano State High Court has sentenced Salisu Idris to death by hanging for setting a house on fire and killing a family of three.
The incident occurred in Gayawa Quarters, Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.
Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu delivered the ruling on Tuesday, stating that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
“I hereby sentence Idris to death by hanging for burning the victims alive,” she declared.
According to the prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the crime took place in the early hours of September 25, 2019. Idris, along with another suspect, Aliyu Abdullahi-Anas—who remains at large—allegedly set fire to the home of 50-year-old Aminu Bala.
The fire resulted in the deaths of Bala, his wife, and their two-year-old child.
The prosecution presented two witnesses and a confessional statement made by Idris during the trial.
Idris, however, denied committing the crime.
The offence was said to be in violation of Sections 85 and 221 of the Penal Code.
The defence counsel, Mustafa Hussaini, called Idris to testify in his own defence.
