An applicant, Eze Kelvin, was on Tuesday docked in an upper Area Court in Karu, Abuja for allegedly swindling a trader of N594,000 worth of wood.
The police charged Kelvin, 29, of Jikoyi with criminal breach of trust, cheating and belonging to a gang of thieves.
The Prosecution Counsel, Olanrewaju Osho told the court that the defendant walked into the complainant’s shop in Kugbo, Abuja and presented himself as Pastor James.
Osho said the complainant loaned the defendant N250,000 with a promise to pay the money.
He also said further investigation revealed that the defendant belonged to gang of fake bank alerts fraudsters who specialise in defrauding innocent victims.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 312, 324 and 306 of the penal code.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Judge, Malam Hassan Mohammed, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N600,000 with one surety in like sum and the surety should write an undertaken to produce defendant at anytime.
The judge ordered that one third of the money be deposited as part of bail bond.
Mohammed ordered that surety address must be verified by court officer and police.
Mohammed therefore adjourned the case until Dec. 15, for further hearing. (NAN)
