Senate President Ahmed Lawan has hinted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will work with opposition political parties in the 10th National Assembly in the overall interest of Nigeria.
This is even as he disagreed with the notion that the opposition lawmakers may upstage their counterparts elected on the platform of APC to install the leadership of the Senate and Federal House of Representatives.
Lawan who spoke to State House Correspondents after paying a Sallah homage to President Muhammadu Buhari at Presidential Villa, Abuja on Friday, said that its not true that APC members of the National Assembly are not united as to give the opposition the latitude to takeover the leadership of NASS.
According to him APC is more united than ever and will going into the selection for the NASS leadership position as a one united front, pointing out that the party’s leadership is on top of the situation as decision on the subject matter will hot up after the Sallah celebration.
The Senate President however said that APC members-elect in both NASS chambers will collaborate with the opposition parties to ensure harmony in the chambers and progress of Nigeria.
Said he: “It’s better to have a harmonious house than a rancourous situation which will retard the progress of the National Assembly with its ripple effects in the polity. For this reason, APC will work with opposition parties to elect the leadership of the 10th National Assembly”.
Lawan who evaded the question on the possibility of him contesting for the Senate President’s post, argued that the country stands to gain if the National Assembly is in harmony.
Those who have declared for the Office of the Senate President are Orji Uzor Kalu, Osita Bonaventure Izunaso, Barau Jibrin, Godswill Akpabio, Abdul-Aziz Yari, Dave Umahi and Sani Musa.
Meanwhile, the Senate President has given a pass mark to President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for what he called landmark achievements in the area of infrastructural development.
Said he: “There is no part of Nigeria that the APC government under President Buhari did not leave a legacy in the area of provision of infrastructural development. Go to the South East you will see the 2nd Niger Bridge which started during the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) administrations of Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua of the blessed memory and President Goodluck Jonathan but nothing was done except the breaking of ground.
“But President Buhari’s administration despite doubts by Nigerians that 2nd Niger Bridge cannot be done, has been built and its in use now. Across Nigeria, Buhari has put massive infrastructure and we should be grateful to Mr. President”.
