By: Gracious Akujobi The Ikoyi Club 1938 was a beehive of activities over the weekend as First Bank Plc sponsored a golf tournament came to a close.
Amateur golfer Olaitan Mutiu from Ikeja Club, emerged overall winner for the third time after a keenly contested tournament beating over 80 competitors from all over Nigeria to win the prestigious First Bank Lagos Amateur Open.
“First Bank Open is the biggest and the most prestigious amateur tournament in Nigeria, to win the three times in a row is a big feat which means I am on the track to being a legend.I intend to participate in this tournament and win again and again; this victory is sweet better than the first and second” an elated Mutiu stated.
Olaitan’s total gross was 155, while Bawa Umur of Kaduna Golf Club and Ajah Millu of Dolphins Golf Club finished second and third place with 157 gross.
In the Ladies Guest tournament Bella Samuel won while the Ellen Hall was the runner up. The men Guest event saw Tunde Oremule and Charles Idowu declared winner and runner up respectively.
In his speech Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of First Bank Plc, Bisi Onasanya, commended the Golfers from all over Nigeria while praising the Ikoyi Club 1938 for ensuring top notch maintenance of its golf course.
‘’We know this year’s competition has been as competitive as we have come to expect. But we remember the popular American Comedian Bob Hope who said ‘if you watch a game, its fun, if you play its recreation but if you work at it, it’s Golf.’ I say a big congratulation to all our golfers today for your hard work in this exciting game of golf’’ he stated.
