The Super Eagles of Nigeria started their campaign at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win against Egypt at the Stade Roumde Adija, Garoua on Tuesday.
Kelechi Iheanacho netted the decisive goal in the first half of the game dominated by the Nigerian side.
Moses Simon delivered a dangerous cross from the left, which was cleared for Joe Aribo to head into the box for Iheanacho to control and fire an unstoppable shot beyond the Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy
It was the Leicester City striker’s first international goal since September 2021 against Liberia in Lagos.
The Super Eagles wasted a number of chances in the second half with Chidera Ejuke and Simon coming close.
Austine Eguavoen’s side will face Sudan in their second game on Saturday.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles are on top of Group D with three points.
