The Kano State Government has begun an extensive orientation programme for 50 students awarded scholarship by the Al-Azhar University of Egypt.
Addressing the participants on Thursday in Kano, the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Umar Doguwa said that the training was organised to prepare the students for the journey ahead.
Doguwa said the administration of Gov. Abba Kabir -Yusuf recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the management of Al-Azhar University.
He said that the University awarded free scholarships to 50 indigenous students to study Arabic law courses during the signing of the MoU.
Doguwa said that students from Islamiyya schools across the 44 local government areas of the state were taking part in the orientation.
The commissioner explained that professional teachers were assigned to conduct the orientation exercise.
He added that 5 Ulamas were also invited to deliver lectures to the students to make them well prepared.
“I want to assure you that the present administration will do everything possible to make you feel comfortable while pursuing your studies.
“We are going to explore more opprtunities that will provide access to quality education for our students,” he said.
Doguwa further said that the administration was taking positive steps to restore the lost glory of the state’s education sector.
The commissioner explained that such measures included the conduct of massive school enrollment, and distribution of instructional materials, among others.
He also said that preparations had been completed to begin the provision of upkeep allowance to schools, distribution of adequate school furniture and free uniforms to ensure conducive learning environment.
The commissioner said the administration had also already awarded contracts for the construction of classrooms across the state’s 44 local government areas.
Doguwa, who congratulated the students for getting the scholarship, charged them to become good ambassadors of the state and remain committed to their studies.
Also speaking, the State Hisbah Commander General, Sheik Aminu Daurawa emphasised the need for the students to imbibe the spirit of hardwork, loyalty and perseverance while they are at the University.
Daurawa further lauded the administration of Gov. Yusuf for its commitment towards improving the education sector.
Speaking on behalf of the beneciaries, Abdulsalam Musa, thanked the state government and Al- Azhar University for giving them the opportunity for the scholarship.
Earlier, the programme coordinator, Dr Abdukadir Kurawa expressed gratitude to Gov. Yusuf for giving them all the necessary support in making the programme successful.(NAN).
