Baring last minute change of position, the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) is poised for a showdown with the management of Champion Newspapers over unpaid salary in excess of 24 months.
The Union is particularly irked that the management is making no effort at all to clear the outstanding pay.
Mr. Deji Elumoye, Lagos NUJ chairman, speaking at the monthly congress in Lagos, decried a situation where the management is planning an award ceremony and has penciled down top politicians for honour.
Elumoye, said he has nothing against the beneficiaries of the Award, especially Governor Kayode Fayemi that has been penciled down for Governor of the Year award.
He vowed, “I assure you that the award will not hold, we will disrupt it, if they like they should take it to Imo State, home of the publisher, we will be there. We will carry placards.
“Do they want our members to die before they start paying?”. We gathered that the local union has been on work-to-rule in the past one month but management of the newspaper has been able to employ hunger as tactics to lure many production staff to assist it to produce the newspaper hence its intermittent appearance on the news stand”.
