Tensions flared in Osun State on Monday as the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) exchanged harsh words over a call to remove Governor Ademola Adeleke in the upcoming 2026 governorship election.

The NNPP, in a statement issued by its state chairman, Dr. Tosin Odeyemi, criticised Adeleke’s administration, describing it as lacking direction and prioritising personal interests over state development.

“Osun deserves more than the current leadership,” Odeyemi said.

“We need someone with a deep understanding of governance—someone who can rise above party politics and serve the people sincerely.”

He called on opposition parties to unite behind a credible candidate, warning that failure to do so could jeopardise the state’s future.

In a swift rebuttal, the PDP dismissed the allegations as baseless.

The party, through its Director of Media and Publicity, Oladele Bamiji, accused Odeyemi of making unfounded claims without proper insight into Adeleke’s performance.

The PDP highlighted a series of projects under Adeleke’s administration, including the construction of over 200 kilometres of roads, Osun’s first flyover in Ile-Ife, and key infrastructure in Osogbo such as dual carriageways and two additional flyovers.

Bamiji further noted the governor’s efforts to clear billions in salary arrears, the introduction of free health insurance for pensioners and people with disabilities, and the rehabilitation of over 200 primary healthcare centres across the state.

“If Odeyemi chooses to ignore these achievements, then he is clearly blinded by political resentment,” the PDP statement read.

The party expressed strong confidence in Adeleke’s continued popularity among Osun residents and affirmed that the governor remains focused on delivering impactful projects and services, undeterred by political criticisms.

As the 2026 election draws nearer, the battle lines between the NNPP and PDP are becoming more defined, setting the stage for a fierce contest over Osun State’s leadership.
