Barring last minute postponement, the much-awaited Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) 2022 Elective Congress will today (Friday) hold in Benin City, Edo state capital, with 11 candidates including two out-going Vice Presidents, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi and Mallam Shehu Dikko as well as Dr. Christian Emeruwa jostling for the post of the President of the federation for the next four years.
Uncertainties have trailed the 2022 Elective Congress with several litigants and defendants running to the courts of the land to either stop the election or to vacate the injunction and go ahead with the Congress to elect the new President of NFF and Executive Committee members.
However, with the Appeal Court ruling in Abuja on Thursday, September 29, the Elective Congress in Benin City may be a reality as the stage is set for the 11 presidential candidates including the frontrunner Dr. Emeruwa to test their popularity on the turf.
Meanwhile, elections are full of intrigues as most of the candidates may have their own strategies to carry the day as the clock continues to tick to the zero hour even as 44 votes are up for grabs.
Unfortunately, States Football Association Chairmen are holding 37 out 44 votes, a situation which has left a sour taste in the mouths of critical stakeholders in football in Nigeria football and the reason for the bitter feud in the football fraternity.
But, Dr. Emeruwa whose strategic plans have resonated with a cross section of genuine football stakeholders is expected to make an impressive showing by getting the votes of those States FA Chairmen who applauded his presentations when he met with them on zonal basis.
Whoever emerges the new NFF President today in Benin City, is expected to hit the ground running as Nigeria and Nigerians are eager to see the country’s national teams and clubs excel in Africa and world football competitions.
