By Akeem Oyetunji President Goodluck Jonathan early Thursday disappointed many party chieftains who were expecting him to drop Namadi Sambo as his running mate in the 2015 presidential election.
Speaking at the Eagles Square, Abuja, venue of the two-day national convention of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, the President announced that he would still run with his vice, Sambo.
Jonathan on assumption of office as Acting President in 2010, had picked Namadi Sambo, then Governor of Kaduna State as his vice and ran with him in the 2011 presidential election.
However, there have been speculations that he was being pressured to drop him for either Katsina Governor Ibrahim Shema or Sule Lamido of Jigawa.
The convention voted to ratify the adoption of Goodluck Jonathan as the PDP presidential candidate ahead of 2015 elections.
Prompt News recalls that the various organs of the ruling party had adopted Jonathan as the PDP’s sole candidate, expressing satisfaction with his performance so far.
Jonathan, in his speech thanked party members for believing in him, assuring that all aggrieved members would be reconciled on the road to the general elections.
Also, the convention ratified by votes, the appointment of a former Governor of Bauch state, Adamu Mu’azu as the party’s national chairman alongside some officers of the party.
Mr Mu’azu, it will be recalled was appointed by the National executive Council earlier in the year, following the resignation of Bamanga Tukur.
The convention was attended by over 3,000 delegates from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.
