No fewer than 100 cyclists have registered to participate in a 25-kilometre ride around the city of Ibadan on Saturday to mark this year’s World Bicycle Day.
Chief Executive Officer of Lapet Feats, Olawale Samson, said in a statement that the event was organised in collaboration with Oyo State Sports Council and Rising Stars Sports Academy.
Samson said that other partners in the ride to mark the 2023 World Bicycle Day rally included: Amatropics Newslive Media and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
According to him, participants are amateur and professional cyclists as well as qualified individuals with passion for cycling.
Samson said that the ride would take off at 7.30 a.m. from Eleyele through Mokola roundabout to Agodi State Secretariat, University of Ibadan and back through Sango to the Eleyele take-off point.
He said that officials of the FRSC, police and other law enforcement agencies had been mobilised to provide logistics support for the event.
First observed in 2018, the World Bicycle Day celebrates the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean, environmentally-fit and sustainable means of transportation that can serve as a means of transportation and access to education, healthcare and sports.
Walking and cycling can also provide a form of transportation for the urban poor, while reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain types of cancer, diabetes and even death. (NAN)
