By Olusegun Lawrence Nigerian lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Thursday went physical as they exchanged punches at plenary session.
Some members of the House disrupted proceedings over the nomination of Principal Officers especially the House Leader and Chief Whip.
The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, had called for an Executive Session which some members protested against.
As temper rose, aggrieved lawmakers made their way to the take possession of the mace, the symbol of authority of the Chamber.
Also, some members started signing and pandemonium ensued, which later degenerated into fisticuffs and exchange of punches.
However, the sergeant At-Arms and the security operatives of the National Assembly prevented them from taking the mace away.
The Lower Chamber has been sharply divided with some members being loyal to the party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and others to the Speaker.
While some members are of the view that party’s position on the nomination of other Principal Officers of the House must subsist, others loyal to the Speaker feel otherwise.
Prompt News recalls that Mr. Dogara, defied party’s directive that favoured Femi Gbajabiamila to emerge the Speaker.
