Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau on Thursday inaugurated two mini-grid 50 kilowatts power projects in Demshin and Angwan Rina communities in Shendam, his home Local Government.
The two rural communities now have access to electricity supply for the first time in their history.
The projects were executed through Plateau Government partnership with Federal and German governments in conjunction with European Union.
Lalong said the state government was encouraged by the impact that the project created and would work toward replicating it in other communities.
The governor called on investors to explore other sources of renewable energy that the state was blessed with for the benefit of the people and promised to provide free bulbs to households, worship centres and schools.
The Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, represented by ministry official, Mr Faruk Yabo, said the project was a demonstration of the importance government attached to the provision of electricity to rural areas.
Fashola said similar mini-grid projects were recently inaugurated in five other states of the federation.
According to him, efforts are being put in place to resolve problems of power supply in the country.
The minister said power generation had improved to over 7,000 megawatts as transmission capacity had also improved by same megawatts in the last two years.
The Plateau Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy, Mr Jafaru Wuyep, said that the contractor was ready to expand the project from 50 kilowatts to 90 kilowatts in the two communities.
He announced that the total cost of the project stood at over 600 Euros with a grant support of 61 one per cent.
Mr Elias Kwaps, the Chairman, Shendam Local Government, urged the benefiting communities to guard the facilities jealously.
